El-Rufai says FG is planning to kill Tambuwal for dumping PDP

The Deputy National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress,  Mallam Nasir el-Rufai, in Kaduna on Friday (today) said the withdrawal of the security details of the Speaker, House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal who recently dumped PDP for APC, was a plot by the Federal Government to eliminate him (Tambuwal).

The former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory accused President Goodluck Jonathan of masterminding the withdrawal of Tambuwal security aides, alleging that the Speaker was one of the targets of snipers being purportedly groomed by agents of the government.

"The withdrawal of Tambuwal's security aides is on the order of the President Goodluck Jonathan. The IG doesn't act that way. The president ordered the IG to order the removal. Its just the continuation of the Jonathanian impunity.

"This people have no respect for the law. They have no respect for rules. They think they are in power to abuse their control of coercive instruments of power and  we should warn them that impunity has limits. If anything happens to Tambuwal, the whole world would hold them responsible.

"He (Tambuwal) was on the list of those to be taken out by snipers. So, if anything happens to him, we know that it was done intentionally so that this will succeed.

"They should look across Burkina Faso and see what is happening when a government overstays its welcome or engages in wanton impunity. They should learn from history. I think it is very irresponsible on the part of IG and the government to do that." he said.

It would be recalled that ex-president Olusegun Obasanjo had in his open letter to President Jonathan last year alleged that agents of the Federal Government was grooming snipers that would target some prominent Nigerians.

Photo: Woman kills man who tried to rape her

A 22-year-old woman, Ifeoma Okechukwu on Monday, around 12.30pm, in Atlantic View Estate, Alpha Beach Road, Lekki, Lagos State, killed an unidentified suspected rapist.

The Imo State indigene was on her menstrual period and had gone out to buy sanitary pad. She was said to be on her way back home when she was accosted by the stranger.

Narrating what happened, she said: "After buying the sanitary pads, I was going back home when I saw a man, who should be in his forties, standing at a corner. He approached me and ordered me to take him to my house.

"He put his hand into his pocket as if he wanted to bring out a weapon. He said he would kill me if I shouted.

"When we got to the house, he said I should shut the door and I did. He said I should remove my clothes; and I started begging him, but he refused to listen.

"So I told him to let me get to the kitchen because I was cooking something and I would be back. I got a rod and hid it in my wrapper. I went back and moved slowly towards him, still begging, but he refused.

"He was taking off his clothes and wearing a condom when I used the rod to hit him in the head. I started screaming. And then I picked the phone and called my uncle."

The victim's uncle, who pleaded anonymity, told PUNCH Metro that he went to report the matter at the Ilasan Police Station after learning what had happened.

He said, "I was not at home when the incident happened and her younger brother had also gone out. So, she was alone in the house and it was possible he had been monitoring her movement.

"When she called me and said what had happened, I left the office and went to the police station in Jakande Estate where I reported the matter."

Meanwhile a police source told PUNCH Metro that investigators found a pack of condoms on the deceased, including a phone without a SIM card.

The source added that since the incident happened, no one had shown up to claim the man's corpse.

Okechukwu was however said to have been arrested and detained in police custody.

Man commits suicide over N1,000 theft

A 32-year-old man, Mr. Simon Mbam, of Izzi Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has committed suicide after he was tortured by some villagers for allegedly stealing N1,000 from a shop in the market.

The victim, who jumped into a pond in the area last weekend, found himself in the mess when he left his house in the evening of the fateful day to buy drinks with his friends.

While late Simon and his friends were busy sipping their drinks, the owner of the shop raised an alarm over a missing N1,000 in his carton of drinks, but no customer admitted to haven taken the money.

The alarm raised by the shop owner attracted villagers who stormed the scene and gave the suspects till the following day to return the money or face the consequences.

It was learned that the said missing money was found at the door step of the shop, but when the villagers who were determined to get to the root of the matter gathered, the owner of the shop insisted on knowing the person behind the act.

Vanguard further gathered that the suspect, who later confessed to the crime, was allegedly beaten by the irate villagers until he started bleeding and losing consciousness.

They demanded that he should be treated like a thief, even as he was fined two goats, two crates of beer and N5,000, which were immediately provided by the suspect's mother (names withheld).

It was gathered that the village head rejected what the suspect's mother brought, insisting that an additional N5,000 should be provided so that the matter would be completely resolved without involving the police.

This second demand by the villagers made the suspect, who felt humiliated by the entire process, escape from his captors and jumped into Aku Pond, which was not far from the market square.

All efforts to rescue him on time proved abortive as he drowned before his body was retrieved by the villagers.

Meanwhile, four persons including the village head, had been arrested by the police after the mother of the victim reported the matter.

House Speaker Tambuwal dumps PDP for APC, shuts House till Dec 3, PDP asks him to do the needful

Aminu Tambuwal

After months of speculation and denial, the speaker of Nigeria's House of Representatives, Aminu Tambuwal, has dumped the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, for main opposition, All Progressives Congress, APC.

Tambuwal formally announced his defection on Tuesday at the House plenary. He said he was heeding to the calls of members of his constituency.

After making the announcement of his defection to the APC, Tambuwal adjourned the plenary session of the House till December 3.

The PDP has in a statement released yesterday, asked Tambuwal to resign.

"After a thorough consideration of the matter, the NWC (National Working Committee) came to a conclusion that the Hon. Speaker, as a responsible elected officer, knows full well what is needful and honourable of him since his new party is in the minority. We are not unmindful of the fact that Hon. Tambuwal became Speaker on the platform of the PDP as the political party with the majority of seats in the House of Representatives and that this incontrovertible fact has not changed". the PDP said.

PDP refuses to sell presidential nomination form to aspirants after collecting their N24m

A fresh crisis is brewing in the Peoples Democratic Party over the insistence of some of its members to contest its presidential primary with President Goodluck Jonathan, who has been endorsed as its sole presidential candidate.

Two aspirants, Dr. Abdul-Jhalil Tafawa-Balewa and Prof. Akasoba Duke-Abiola, were at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja on Tuesday to purchase the forms, but the national leadership of the party refused to sell its presidential nomination and expression of interest forms to them.

Tafawa-Balewa, who hails from Bauchi State, and he is also the son of Nigeria's First Republic Prime Minister, the late Abubakar Tafawa-Balewa, was the first to storm the party's national secretariat with his supporters and bank tellers, with which he had hoped to purchase the presidential nomination and expression of interest forms.

The bank tellers indicated that he deposited N22m into the account of the party with Zenith Bank. The breakdown of the fees showed that he paid N20m as nomination fee and another N2m for the expression of interest form.

Rather than being issued his forms, the aspirant claimed that he was told by officials of the party that the forms were not ready. Meanwhile the party is expected to stop the selling of forms to all the aspirants on Thursday (tomorrow).

Tafawa-Balewa said he was told that all other forms were on sale except the presidential nomination and expression of interest forms.

He said, "I have paid for my forms. I was however told that they don't have the forms ready. No matter, I am still here. I will send some of my people here on Thursday to come and pick the forms."

Speaking on the refusal of the party to present her with her forms, Duke-Abiola, who is one of the widows of the late Chief MKO Abiola, described the action of the party as questionable.

Displaying the Diamond Bank Teller with which she paid her N2m to the party's bank account, Duke-Abiola wondered why the party would issue her receipts and refused to sell the forms to her.

Female aspirants, like her, are expected to pay just N2m for the expression of interest form while the nomination form is free for them.

The party claimed it took the decision to encourage female aspirants to run for elective offices.

The presidential aspirant said she was told by the National Chairman of the party, Alhaji Adamu Mu'azu and Mustapha that the party printed only one form.

She said, "I have the receipt from the party after paying my money. But they said they printed only one presidential nomination form, even though the guidelines do not say that.

"The NOS and the National Chairman said the party printed only one form. I asked that they should give the one they printed to me since I was there. They.laughed and said whether I didn't know who they printed it for. This is a fraud."

She said that she would not ask for a refund of her money, but that the party must sell the forms to her, having paid for them since she said there was vacancy in Aso Rock.

Shocking details of how Boko Haram raped abducted girls

"He soon began to threaten me with a knife to have sex with him and when I refused, he brought out his gun, warning that he would kill me if I shouted."

"Then he began to rape me every night … I had never had sex before; it was very painful and I cried bitterly because I was bleeding afterwards."

These were the words of a 15-year-old girl, who was abducted by Boko Haram and forcibly married to one of its commanders in a camp in the Sambisa Forest, Borno State.

The girl, according to a report by Human Rights Watch, was abducted in 2013 but she escaped after four weeks in captivity.

The teenager is one of the five girls that personally recounted their ordeals in the publication which was made public on Monday. She said that after her marriage to the commander who was in his early 30s, she was ordered to live with him in cave.

An 18-year-old victim also described how an insurgent sexually abused her when she went to use the bathroom.

She said, "I did not know he followed me when I walked a short distance away from the tree under which we slept. He grabbed me from behind, roughly fondling me while trying to take off his pants. I screamed in fright and he hurriedly left me as I continued to shout for help."

Another woman, who was raped in 2013 in one of the militants' camps near Gwoza, described how a commander's wife seemed to encourage the crime.

"I was lying down in the cave pretending to be ill because I did not want the marriage the commander planned to conduct for me with another insurgent on his return from the Sambisa camp. When the insurgent who had paid my dowry came in to force himself on me, the commander's wife blocked the cave entrance and watched as the man raped me."

Another woman aged 19, who was married and had children, described how she and one other woman were raped after having been abducted in April 2014.

She said, "When we arrived at the camp, they left us under a tree. I managed to sleep. I was exhausted and afraid. Late in the night, two insurgents woke me and another woman, saying their leader wanted to see us.

"We had no choice but to follow them; but as soon as we moved deep into the bush, one of them dragged me away, while his partner took the other woman to another direction.

"I guessed what they had in mind and I began to cry. I begged him, telling him I was a married woman. He ignored my pleas, flung me on the ground, and raped me. I could not tell anyone what happened, not even my husband.

"I still feel so ashamed and cheated. The other woman told me she was also raped but vowed never to speak of it as she was single and believes that news of her rape would foreclose her chances of marriage."

Boko Haram abduct 30 adolescents as they prepare to release Chibok girls today

Suspected Boko Haram insurgents over the weekend abducted about 30 adolescents - some of them girls aged as young as 11, a local village chief told journalists on sunday.

"The insurgents... grabbed young people, boys and girls, from our region," said Alhaji Shettima Maina, who is in charge of the Mafa village around 50 kilometres east of the city of Maiduguri.

"They took all boys aged 13 and over... and all girls aged 11 and more. According to our information, 30 young people were abducted in the last two days," he said.

This report is coming a day after a self acclaimed secretary General of Boko Haram, Mallam Danladi Ahmadu promised that the group will release the over 200 abducted Chibok school girls on Monday (today) to Chadian President, Idriss Derby for onward presentation to the Nigerian government.

Boko Haram: 'Displaced victims eat grass to survive'

According to the Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, over 90,000 of its members, displaced in the troubled North-East had to feed on grass and insects to survive in their hideouts.

The church, in a press statement by the Director of Information, Rev. Fr. Gideon Obasogie on Sunday, said. "A good number of those trapped around the Cameroonian borders are gradually finding their way into Maiduguri. Counting their ordeals, some will tell you how they fed on grass and insects. A group from Pulka community alone buried over 80 children, who took ill in the bush and died."

He also decried that over 14 parishes have been sacked in the area, with about 20 priests displaced and some members still searching for their loved ones in both Maiduguri and Yola dioceses.

He noted that the church has spent over N3m on all internally displaced persons at different locations in Maiduguri, explaining that this church took to this because it "must bear witness to the Gospel both in word and deed."

The church encouraged the people "not to lose faith, but to use this moment of trial and persecution as a golden opportunity to express abundantly the faith they profess."

2015: I'm not a religious fanatic - Buhari says he may choose a Christian as his running mate

Muhammadu Buhari

Former Head of State and presidential aspirant of the All Progressives Congress, Muhammadu Buhari says he is not a religious fundamentalist.

Buhari, in an interview with TheCable, hinted that his running mate may be a Muslim or a Christian noting that he had chosen Christians as his running mate on several occasions, contrary to the belief that he is a fanatic.

"Nigerians will always uncover impossible room for manoeuvre for politicians. I had to face one of the governors during one of our party's meetings (over the issue of religion).

"In 2003, I chose Chuba Okadigbo as my running mate. He was a Roman Catholic. He was an Igbo. In 2007, I picked Edwin Ume-Ezeoke. He was a Roman Catholic. He was an Igbo. And in 2010, I chose even a pastor, Pastor Tunde Bakare.

"Honestly, what do Nigerians want me to do? If they don't believe I'm not a fundamentalist, what else can I do?" he said.

He further said, "I have not absolutely closed my mind to picking a Christian or Muslim as running mate if I get the ticket. I firmly believe that Nigerians, having gone through what they have gone through, realise it is not a matter of religion, but a matter of Nigeria.

"And the main religions, Christianity and Islam, they know and they believe in the Almighty God. The question of stealing and short-changing people in the name of religion should stop," he said.

Why i did a solo endorsement without my brother - Peter Okoye

P-Square's Peter Okoye has explained why he got an Olympic milk endorsement without his brother, Paul. Speaking at his unveiling as the brand ambassador of the milk product, Peter debunked speculations that he would soon break from his brother.

"Music is like football. For example, if I play for Barcelona and I get endorsed by Nike, it doesn't mean the whole Barcelona team has been endorsed. This is about me and not me and Paul" he explained.

"Among thousands or perhaps millions of people in the entertainment industry, I felt honoured to be chosen as the brand ambassador. The deal means a lot, not just to me but also to my fans. If a brand isn't worth it I have nothing to do with such a brand. The fact that I am ready to work with this brand is an indication of its top quality" he added.
