Army General says Nigerians should be allowed to carry arms to defend themselves against Boko Haram

The Commander, 1 Brigade, of the Nigerian Army, Tasi'u Ibrahim, said if Nigeria is to 'holistically' win the war against terrorism, its citizens must be allowed to defend themselves, by carrying arms.

Mr. Ibrahim, a Brigadier General, made the call in Sokoto while addressing the Brigade's 2014 Officers Training Day.

According to him, this is being practiced in developed nations of the world.

Mr. Ibrahim listed other measures needed to defeat Boko Haram to include strict monitoring and severe restriction on the importation of certain goods being used to aid and abet such crimes.

He stated that such goods included motorcycles.

"It has been proved that a good number of the insurgents use them (motorcycles) for their attacks," he said.

"A good number of those selling petty things by the roadside in most of the nation's cities are simply easy preys in the hands of these insurgents."

Sanusi sues Jonathan, challenges suspension

Sanusi Jonathan

The suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Lamido Sanusi, has dragged President Goodluck Jonathan before an Abuja Federal High Court, challenging his suspension from office.

In the application filed on his behalf by his lawyer, Kola Awodein, SAN, Sanusi is asking the court to restrain the President, the Attorney General of the Federation and the Inspector General of Police from giving effect to his purported suspension from office as the Governor of the CBN, pending the determination of the suit.

He is equally asking the court to make an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the defendants "from obstructing, disturbing, stopping or preventing him, in any manner whatsoever, from performing the functions of his office as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria and enjoying in full, the statutory powers and privileges attached to the office."

Urging the court to expeditiously grant his interlocutory application, Sanusi maintained that any delay might cause irreparable and serious damage and mischief on him in the exercise of his statutory duties as the CBN Governor.

He said, "The President's continuing unlawful interference with the management and administration of the apex bank, unless arrested, poses grave danger for Nigeria's economy."

He insisted that the danger his suspension posed to the economy was enough reason for the court to grant his application and as a result make an order for status quo ante bellum to enable him to return to his office as the Governor of the CBN.

In an affidavit deposed in support of the suit, Sanusi linked his suspension to the discrepancies he reported in the remittances of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation to the Federation Account.

He explained that in the course of his duties as the CBN Governor, he uncovered certain discrepancies in respect of amounts repatriated to the Federation Account from the proceeds of crude oil sales between the period of January 2012 and July 2013.

He added that he expressed concern in respect of the said discrepancies and also informed the National Assembly of same "because they affect the revenue of the federation and the national economy."

Sanusi added that in purporting to suspend him from office, Jonathan was punishing him for the disclosures he made.

Sanusi stressed that the President did not approach nor obtain the support of the Senate before suspending him.

He disclosed that some Senators, particularly former governor of Kwara State, Senator Bukola Saraki, had informed him that Jonathan did not consult the upper legislative chamber before taking the action.

"I have been informed, and I verily believe the information given to me by Senator Bukola Saraki to be true and correct that the Senate did not give the President any support for my purported suspension and removal from office as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria," he said.

DvNsports: Inter Milan target Mikel Obi

Mikel Obi

Chelsea midfielder John Obi MIkel is a target of Italian giants Inter who are looking for a defensive midfielder to shore up their middle.

Italian newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport reports that Walter Mazzari has sent his main scout to monitor the Nigerian whose contract at Stamford Bridge lasts till 2017.

Mikel has seen his Chelsea place come under threat with the arrival of Nemanja Matic in January and has also been curtailed by minor injuries.

Rated at 15 million Euros, the prize could be too high for the San Siro club who are also mauling a loan move in the summer transfer window.

Inter will also wait to see if Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho has an interest in signing any Inter player which could result in Mikel being thrown into the negotiations.

Mikel is expected to lead Nigeria's charge at the World Cup in June and an impressive performance with the Super Eagles would shoot up his profile and asking fees.

"Nitabai is the cousin of President Goodluck Jonathan, and was kidnapped from his compound located before Otuoke bridge, off Otu-Okpoti-Ogbia Road without a gunshot," the source said.

"We came back from somewhere around 8pm. Silas was at the verandah doing his assignment while my in-law, my sister and two other siblings were in the living room together.

"After sometimes, Silas came shouting and saying that some people had just entered into the compound. As we sprang on our feet, we were confused because we didn't know where to run to."

A security source told Vanguard that the chief's vehicle was later recovered at Onuegbum community waterfront where it was abandoned, an indication that they gunmen might have made away with their victim through the creek.

FG still open to dialogue with Boko Haram - President Jonathan

Boko Haram Amnesty

President Goodluck Jonathan has said that the Federal Government is still open to constructive dialogue with the Boko Haram sect to end insurgency in the North East zone of the country.

The president stated this in Abuja on Monday when he declared open an International seminar on the Observance of Human Rights and International Humanitarian Law in Internal Security Operations.

The seminar which held at the National Defence College, was co-hosted by the Offices of the Attorney-General of the Federation (A-GF) and the National Security Adviser (NSA).

Jonathan called on members of the sect to lay down their arms and table their grievances, if any, before government.

He, however, clarified that while waiting for the response from the sect, the military operations in the troubled areas would continue to safeguard lives and property.

"Our administration has committed tremendous resources and adopted several approaches to prosecuting the fight against terror in Nigeria.

"The declaration of a state of emergency in Adamawa, Borno and Yobe states is one of the measures taken to contain the activities of the terrorists.

"The National Committee on Peace and Dialogue in the Northern parts of the country was constituted to explore ways of dialoguing with the Boko Haram sect with a view to addressing their grievances, if any.

"I wish to use this platform to renew my previous call to members of the sect to lay down their arms and engage government in a constructive manner in order to address their grievances, if truly they have any reason to do what they are doing.

"However, while we are awaiting a positive response from the Boko Haram sect, it is important to note that government has the responsibility to protect the lives and property of our citizens.

"No efforts will be spared by this administration in discharging that responsibility."

The president commended the organisers of the seminar with the theme "Engendering Greater Understanding of the Legal Underpinning of Internal Security Operations".

Justin Bieber relocates to Atlanta, Residents protest he is bad for their kids

Justin Bieber

Justin Bieber's new neighbors aren't exactly rolling out the welcome mat, there's a big protest scheduled for Monday morning thrown by residents who fear their kids will get mowed down by the pot-smoking, sizzurp-slurping speed demon.

Residents in the uber-exclusive area of Buckhead where Bieber is renting a house from rap mogul Dallas Austin are asking protesters to show up at 6 AM ET and it looks like lots of people will be there.

More than 200 people say they're gong after signing a petition which reads, "We have worked hard to achieve our goals and get where we are. Justin Bieber's relocation to Atlanta can be nothing but bad for our children."

The petition goes on, "Some can't even let their child play in the driveway without fear; he has raced vehicles under the influence before. What's to say he won't do it again?"

And the end is great: "Please don't allow a child to ruin what we have worked so hard to obtain."

Boko Haram: Nigeria seals border with Cameroon

Boko Haram

Following waves of attacks by Boko Haram Islamists, Nigeria has sealed a portion of its northeastern border with Cameroon to block the movement of insurgents and other criminal groups.

The closure has been imposed in Adamawa state, one of three states in the northeast placed under emergency rule in May.

The military has launched a major offensive in the area aimed at crushing the Islamist uprising, which has killed thousands since 2009.

Nigeria claims that the Islamists have set up bases in sparsely populated areas of its northeastern neighbours - Cameroon, Chad and Niger - and flee across the border after staging attacks to avoid military pursuit.

"What I did was completely seal off the borders, no going in, no going out," said Brigadier General Rogers Iben Nicholas, the top military commander in Adamawa.

He said the measure had been in place since Monday and that it has already curtailed "the influx of miscreants (and) terrorist elements" into Nigeria.

"Other security agencies like the customs, immigration services, have been told. Our soldiers and police are also there working together to ensure that nothing crosses into Nigeria," Nicholas said.

Adamawa has been less hit by violence than the other affected states, Borno and Yobe, but it is thought to provide key transport routes for the insurgents.

Despite the state of emergency, Boko Haram has continued to carry out attacks in the northeast, with more than 300 people killed already this year.

Mother burns 11-yr-old daughter's buttocks with hot knife for being 'stubborn'

A middle aged woman, Ene Edem Okon, has been arrested by the police for allegedly inflicting bodily harm and tying her 11-year-old daughter, Queeneth Ene Edem, hands and legs for being wayward. She was arrested when Queeneth appeared in her school, Government Primary School, Akim, with multiple wounds on her chest, stomach and buttocks prompting the school authorities to report the matter to the police at the Akim Police Station.

The girl narrated to Sunday Vanguard that, on February 17, she left home at Eneyo village in Akpabuyo Local Government Area for the Maternity Junction Settlement, some four kilometers away from home, to meet her cousin, one Blessing, but did not return home. "We were waiting for Blessing's friend from whom she wanted to collect something but she delayed in coming and we waited till night and, because we were afraid of going back home, we slept in an uncompleted building at the Maternity Junction", she said.

The 11-year-old said the next day, one of her friends saw her at the Maternity Junction and told her that her mother was looking for her with a machete after which she became afraid to go back home. "We stayed on the road near our house and were breaking kernel to eat when my mother sent somebody to come and catch us. That person came pretending to play with us but suddenly grabbed me and dragged me to my mother".

The mother, angry, allegedly got hold of her and used a rod to hit her all over her body, thus
leaving her with severe wounds.
"She also put the kitchen knife
in the fire she was cooking and when it was hot, she placed it
on my buttocks", the girl
stated.

When Sunday Vanguard met Mrs
Ene Okon at the Akim Police
Station, she appeared
remorseful, stating that she
was driven by anger because
Queeneth was stubborn and had formed the habit of spending the
night outside at such a tender
age. "I sent her to school in
far away Calabar because I
don't trust the school here in
Akpabuyo but she is just too stubborn, so I had to teach her
a lesson."

Mr Hogan Bassey, the police
spokesman for Cross River Police
Command, said the woman would
appear in court after investigations are concluded.

Mr Bassey Ibor, a child rights activist, said children's courts in the state are not functioning and called on the state government to fund the courts. "The cases we have taken to the children's courts have suffered long adjournments because the judges are not sitting. Government should, as a matter of urgency, ensure that the courts are funded so that these children would not continue to be denied of justice."

Yoruba actress Foluke Daramola says she was raped

Foluke Daramola

Yoruba actress, Foluke Daramola-Salako, in a recent interview made a shocking revelation on how she lost her virginity to rapists when she was very young.

The actress, who is currently championing the course of her Non-Government Organisation, Action Against Rape In Africa, explained that her experiences as female child played a vital role in the establishment of the NGO.

The NGO is also supported by her colleagues including Fathia Balogun, Ronke Ojo, Eniola Badmus and Ayo Adesanya.

She said "I have had different experiences; I have been in a marriage once, I was abused in it, I was deflowered by rapists, I lost my father when I was two years-old, it wasn't easy at all. I started acting when I was a teenager because I needed to put food on my table and to further my education. In fact, I share the same experiences with the common man and that is why I want to do something to assist them.

"I had a younger brother and I never get to have a father figure in my life. As I grew up, my environment exposed me to danger and that was why I was deflowered at an early stage."

DvNsports: Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud admits cheating on his wife

Olivier Giroud

Olivier Giroud has admitted to cheating on his wife hours before Arsenal's crunch FA Cup clash with Liverpool, via an announcement on Twitter.

The striker was accused by The Sun of meeting American model Celia Kay in a hotel room the night before the Gunners played Crystal Palace at the Emirates on February 2.

Giroud at first denied the encounter, but after photos emerged of the half-naked Frenchman in Kay's room, the 27-year-old has now publically confessed to the meeting.

He wrote, in French and English: 'I apologise to my wife, family and friends and my manager, team-mates and Arsenal fans.

'I now have to fight for my family and for my club and obtain their forgiveness. Nothing else matters at the moment.'

Giroud is expected to receive a heavy fine from Arsenal for breaching club curfew rules prior to a game.

Celia, who was at the hotel from 12.50am to 3.04am on February 2, told last week how she and Giroud were 'extremely loving and tactile' but did not have sex.

Russian woman rapes man who tried to rob her

A Russian man who tried to rob a hair salon ended up as the victim when the female shop owner overpowered him, tied him up naked and then used him as a sex slave for three days.

Viktor Jasinski, 32, admitted to police that he had gone to the salon in Meshchovsk, Russia, with the intention of robbing it.

But the tables were turned dramatically when he found himself overcome by owner Olga Zajac, 28, who happened to be a black belt in karate. She allegedly floored the would-be robber with a single kick.

Then, in a scene reminiscent of Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction, police say Zajac dragged the semi-conscious Jasinski to a back room of the salon and tied him up with a hair dryer cable.

She allegedly stripped him naked and, for the next three days, used him as a sex slave to 'teach him a lesson' - force feeding him Viagra to keep the lesson going.

The would-be robber was eventually released, with Zajak saying he had learned his lesson.

Jasinski went straight to the police and told them of his back-room ordeal, saying that he had been held hostage, handcuffed naked to a radiator, and fed nothing but Viagra.

When police arrived to question Zahjac, she said: "What a bastard. Yes, we had sex a couple of times. But I bought him new jeans, gave him food and even gave him 1,000 roubles when he left."

Both have now been arrested.

Photos: Man offers himself as food to white tigers

Chinese zoo keepers managed to save the life of a mentally disturbed man after he announced he wanted to improve the lives of caged tigers at a local zoo by offering them his own body to eat.

Yang Jinhai, 27, had posted several online messages about how optimistic he was about starting a new life after getting a job as a security guard in Chengdu in southwest China's Sichuan province.

But he quickly found the job boring and monotonous and moved instead to a job in a printing factory where he also then resigned, saying that he felt there was more to life.

After going to the local zoo he wrote how depressing it was to see the "noble and magnificent tigers" living in such humble surroundings, where they were caged and unable to follow their natural instincts to hunt and kill.

He then announced that he had decided to sacrifice himself in order to provide the Bengal tigers with support.

Eyewitness Feng Lin said: "He climbed up the outside of the cage and jumped inside expecting, I assume, that the tigers would pounce on him. Instead the two tigers, a male and a female, seemed more nervous than anything else and the female actually ran off.

"He then tried to antagonise the tigers by pulling faces at them. Eventually he was attacked by the male where he was cut after being scratched and bitten before he could be rescued by zoo keepers who fired a tranquilliser dart at the male tiger."

They then pulled the man out of the cage.

Yang's family told local media Mr Jinhai had been depressed for a long time and said that he had been taken to a home where he was given psychiatric counselling to cope with his problems.

DvNsports: Balotelli says he is happy at AC Milan

Mario Balotelli

Mario Balotelli insists that he is "happy" at AC Milan amidst continued speculation that he could be shown the exit door at San Siro this summer.

The Italy international was infamously labelled a "rotten apple" by Rossoneri owner Silvio Berlusconi before the forward's arrival at the Giuseppe Meazza from Manchester City last year, while it was also reported in December that the former Italian Prime Minister had demanded that the 23-year-old be sold during the winter transfer window.

Milan denied the latter claim and while speculation is now rife that Balotelli will be offloaded this summer to fund moves for other players, the man himself says he is going nowhere, revealing that he is enjoying life under new boss Clarence Seedorf.

"I have spoken with him about situations with the team and the things that I must do on the field," the Azzurri ace told Marca. "I'm happy.

Seedorf is a great champion and it's a pleasure to listen to him. He was also a great player. I hope that everything goes well."

Meanwhile, Balotelli confirmed that he would be cheering on City in their last-16 clash with Barcelona.

"I hope that Manchester City beat Barcelona," he confessed. "But it will be difficult for my ex-team-mates as Barcelona are one of the favourites."

The unromantic refrain is featured on the latest remix of Beyonce and Jay's song, which already boasts rude lyrics.

Police arrived at the home about an hour after Ms. Carpenter called them. Officer Dean Marrow told Huzler reporters what they saw when they opened Jerome's bedroom door.

"The young man was on his bed... his penis was detached from his body, it must have been so intense it just came off his body, we found his penis gripped in his left hand so tightly we couldn't get it out, it was tragic,".

Investigators are still investigating the case for more information. Jerome's funeral will take place sometime next week
