Baba Sala is not dead, forget the social media rumours

Moses Adejumo popularly know as Baba Sala is not dead, contrary to the rumours of his death which was spread on social media early Wednesday.

Though the octogenarian was rushed from Ilesa in Osun State to the University College Hospital, Ibadan, on Monday night because of an old age-related ailment.

Speaking through his son, Emmanuel, in Ibadan on Wednesday, Baba Sala told PUNCH correspondent that the social media was responsible for the rumour, he called on Nigerians to continue to pray for his recovery, as he recuperates in the hospital.

He said, “I am alive and doing well here in UCH. The social media spread the rumour without confirming the state of my health. I greet my fans all over the world that showed great concern and love over my health condition. I love you all. I am an old man and conditions like these are expected once in a while.

“I was very active as a child and a young man and I hardly had time to rest. Maybe that is taking its toll on my health now, but I thank God to have lived this far. I still need your prayers at this stage. UCH is taking good care of me.”

Adejumo was on Wednesday moved to a special ward of the hospital after doctors made it clear that he needed to take a break from receiving visitors so that he could have enough rest.

The comedian also attributed his ill health to the stress occasioned by his recent journey abroad, saying that as soon as he left the hospital, he would publicly speak to his fans.

Tailor refuses to return girl’s underwear and clothes after raping her

A 45-year-old tailor, identified only as Fasasi, has allegedly seized the underwear and clothes of a 16-year-old girl, Comfort (not real name) after raping her in the Agege area of Lagos.

It was learnt that the teenager who was a Secondary School Class 1 pupil, was allegedly raped by Fasasi when she ran an errand for her mother. Fasasi reportedly called the girl and asked her to also buy food for him while she ran the errand for her mother.

He was said to have led the teenager to his room, when she requested his plate, and allegedly asked her to remove her clothes and underwear. He then allegedly packed the underwear and the clothes away and raped Comfort.

When Fasasi reportedly refused to return her underwear and clothes after the rape, the girl was said to have fled the room. It was learnt that one of the suspect's neighbours noticed the girl and came to her rescue.

The matter was said to have been reported at the Isokoko Police Division, and Fasasi was arrested.

Narrating how she was raped, Comfort said Fasasi threatened to stab her to death with a knife if she raised the alarm.

She said, “It was on April 19, 2015, at about 5pm. My mother and I live on Shaiba Street in the Agege area. I had never gone to the tailor’s house before. I did not know he was a rapist.

“On the fateful day, he asked me to follow him inside his room to get the plates that I would use to buy food for him. Once I entered the room, he immediately locked the door behind him. He then brought out a knife and threatened to kill me if I did not undress.

“I begged him, but he did not listen. I was scared that he would kill me, so I obeyed. But after removing my clothes and underwear, he collected them from me, and went out with them. I asked him where he was taking them to; he said he was taking them to his shop.

“Seconds later, he returned and he raped me. I was shouting inside the room, but no one seemed to hear me. When he was done, I asked for my clothes, but he said he would not release them unless he had one more round. As soon as I saw an opportunity, I took one of his wrappers, and forced my way out of his room.”

Comfort added that it was when she ran out of the room that one of Fasasi’s neighbours noticed and came to her rescue.

“When I got outside, I met a woman who was one of Fasasi’s neighbours. When she saw me, she understood what had happened and confronted him.”

A resident, who identified herself simply as Abiola, told PUNCH correspondents that one Singede usually bailed the suspect whenever he was arrested by the police.

She said, “A week after Fasasi was arrested, we saw him returning to his shop. They said he was arraigned in court, but he had been granted bail. Singede must have secured his bail as usual.”

It was gathered that the suspect, however, had yet to return Comfort’s clothes and underwear to her.

It was learnt from a source in Fasasi’s house that the suspect might have thrown the clothes away.

Speaking with PUNCH Metro , Comfort’s mother urged the police to ensure that the suspect returned her daughter’s clothes.

She said, “I am afraid of what he might do with my daughter’s underwear. What does he want to do with her clothes? I have been worried since the day this incident happened.”

It was gathered that the rape incident was also reported to the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team.

The DSVRT Coordinator, Mrs. Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, told PUNCH Metro that a request had been sent for the transfer of the case file to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions.

She said, “It was a non-governmental organisation that brought the matter to our attention. What we then did was to refer the victim to Mirabel Centre for proper treatment. We also made a report to the police to ensure that the suspect was arrested and charged to court.

“As we speak, the DPP has requested the case file to be forwarded to it. This is a case of alleged defilement, it will be prosecuted by the DPP.”

President Buhari in search of ‘fearless’ judges to try looters

President Muhammadu Buhari has commenced the process of identifying a few fearless and courageous judges who will be saddled with the responsibility of prosecuting persons who have been found to have stolen national resources, THE PUNCH has learnt.

Buhari had while granting audience to members of the National Peace Committee led by Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar in the Presidential Villa, Abuja on Tuesday disclosed that the prosecution of the indicted persons would commence in a matter of weeks.

“Those who have stolen the national wealth will be in court in a matter of weeks and Nigerians will know those who have short-changed them,” the President had told his guests.

Our correspondent however learnt on Sunday that the prosecution would not be open to “just any judge.”

It was learnt that the President was committed to ensuring that only judges who would expedite action on the cases and would be fearless in discharging their duties would be enlisted for the prosecution.

A source confided in our correspondent that that was one of the assignments Buhari gave to the Prof. Itse Sagay-led Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption which he set up on Monday.

The source said it would not be necessary to set up special courts to try corruption cases since efforts were already underway to identify judges that would key into the President’s dream of ensuring that no looter was left unpunished.

He said, “We do not need to entertain any fear that the prosecution of corruption-related cases will not be fast enough because many of our courts are already weighed down by many cases.

“The truth of the matter is that not all judges will be considered to take up the cases of those who have stolen our commonwealth.

“As a matter of fact, one of the assignments the President gave the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption led by Prof. Sagay is to identify fearless and courageous judges that will handle the cases.

“The idea is to ensure that the judges who will handle the cases will not be just any judges. They must be those who will expedite actions on the cases and discharge their duties with courage.

“You can see that with this development, the issue of special courts for corruption cases may not come. It is about special judges.”

Our correspondent also gathered that Buhari was already considering withdrawing national honours from any individual found to have looted the nation’s treasury.

It was learnt that the President’s position was that the nation should not be seen to be honouring any fruadulent person.

“The President will not hesitate to strip any corrupt person of national honour. Can you honour a person for milking the nation dry? It is irrelevant how long such persons have been bestowed with the national honours, they will be stripped of them,” the source said.

When contacted, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, said it was reasonable that anybody found to be corrupt should be stripped of national honours.

Adesina however said such withdrawal of national honours would not be done until affected persons had been convicted by competent courts.

“Although it has not been considered, it is reasonable that those found guilty of corruption should be stripped of national honours bestowed on them. However, this will not be done before conviction,” the presidential spokesman said.

While announcing the establishment of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption on Monday, Adesina had said its brief was to advise the present administration on the prosecution of the war against corruption and the implementation of required reforms in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

He said the committee was also saddled with the responsibility of developing comprehensive interventions for achieving the recommended reforms.

How a 78-year-old man raped an 11-year-old girl in Lagos

A 78-year-old man, Alhaji Dauda Adebowale has been arrested by Police in Lagos for allegedly raping an 11-year-old girl, Remilekun (not her real name).

The incident was said to have happened in Pen Cinema, in the Agege area of the state.

It was learnt that some time in June 2015, Remilekun was passing by a shop where the old man lived alone when he called to send her on an errand. When she returned, he was said to have dragged her into the shop and raped her, threatening to kill her if she told the act to anyone.

It was gathered that Adebowale, who was said to be living alone in the shop, raped her on several occasions after the first time because he had threatened her with death if she told any one.

However, trouble started for the suspect on Sunday, August 2, when Remilekun, who was reportedly sleeping beside her mother in the afternoon of the fateful day, suddenly woke up, shouting ‘penis, penis’ to the bewilerment of the mother.

The woman, who did not want her name in print, said haggard-looking Remilekun opened up to her after she pestered her.

She said: “On that Sunday, I was ill and was sleeping. She also slept beside me. She suddenly cried out, shouting, ‘penis, penis, penis’. I was shocked. When I asked her what happened, she said it was a man on our street that had been having sex with her.

“I followed her to the man’s house. Some boys confronted him and he confessed to them. I then reported him at the Area G Police Command in Ogba and he was arrested. I took my daughter to a hospital for tests because she has become lean. The medical result showed that her vagina had been tampered with and I have given it to the police.”

The victim, a primary 2 pupil, who spoke in Yoruba, said she had lost count of the number of times the old man had raped her but that she had gotten fed up and called his bluff.

She said: “I was passing by a shop on our street one Saturday afternoon when he called me. He was sitting outside the shop and told me to help him bring a document inside the shop. I was about to leave after I gave him the document when he dragged me inside and locked the door.

“He covered my mouth and raped me. He threatened to kill me if I told anybody. The following day, he called me again and repeated the same thing. I can’t remember how many times he had sex with me. Whenever I told him I would tell my mother, he would say I was playing with my life.

“When I could no longer bear it, I opened up to a woman in our area and she promised that she would make sure the man was evicted from the shop.

“It was few days after that my mother said she heard me shout ‘penis’ while I was asleep.”

Remilekun’s sister, Tokunbo (not her real name) said she had narrowly escaped being trapped by the suspect not knowing that her younger sister had fallen victim.

She said: “He called me two weeks ago and told me that he liked me. He promised to take care of me if I cooperated.

“I said I did not understand and managed to run away. I told my mother when I got home and she warned me to stay off his reach.”

The suspect was arraigned before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court on three counts bordering on rape.

The charges read in part, “That you, Alhaji Dauda Adebowale, 78, sometime in 2015, at a shop in Pen Cinema, Agege, Lagos, in the Ikeja Magisterial District, did have sexual intercourse with one 11-year-old girl.

“That you, within the same period and place in the aforementioned magisterial district, did sexually assault one 11-year-old girl.”

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges which, according to the police, contravene sections 137, 166 and 257 of the Criminal Law II, Vol. 44 of Lagos State, Nigeria, 2011.

The presiding magistrate, Mr. T. Elias, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N1m with two sureties each in like sum.

The matter was adjourned till September 2, 2015, Elias ordered that the man be kept in prison custody pending the time he would be able to perfect his bail.

Peter Okoye secretly dumping his brothers, P-Square?

Peter and Paul Okoye of the popular pop duo, Psquare have long settled the rift which threatened to tear them apart months ago. Since then, they have done things together and made the world believe that blood is thicker than water. But recent activities of Peter, who was the aggrieved party in the squabble has raised some questions many fear what the answers might be.

Peter has just concluded a deal with telecom giant, Globacom, to power his pet project tagged “Dance with Peter” without his twin brother anywhere in the picture. Big deal? It would have really been a big deal if he had not only recently clinched another deal with Olympian Milk, without his brother in the detail again. Maybe, this would have been less disturbing if his brother, Paul, were snapping up deals of his own. He is not. His only life-line, as it appears, is only his tie to the group, which Peter seems to be inadvertently running away from.

The defence on Peter’s side, as some people have mooted, is that he is the extrovert one while his brother is the introvert. But is Psquare extrovert or introvert?

On his solo ‘Dance with Peter’ reality TV show project, he claimed it was a dream he has been nurturing for more than five years. Kaffy, Ehis and Nosa, the Psquare choreographer are all on board without Paul in sight. Doesn’t Paul know anything about dancing?

When he clinched the Olympian Mike endorsement he said it had nothing to do with Psquare, likening himself to a footballer who plays for a team and gets solo endorsement with a separate company.

Has Peter really forgiven his brothers, Paul, and Jude, their manager? During the problem that nearly tore them apart, Peter accused his brothers of disrespecting his wife and vowed never to forgive them for it. There was also a hint that because he is the passive member in the group the brothers could do without him. Some reports claimed that the real brain of the group is Paul, who does most of the singing and composing while Peter is a mere dancer, who tags along only because of his blood tie and dance skills.

At the peak of their rift, a report claims Peter didn’t want settlement because he felt stifled by his brothers and wanted out to really discover himself. If he is on this quest he is doing a nice job of it because he has got two new solid identities without his brothers breathing down his neck.

Psquare has just won the best group of the decade at the just concluded MTV Africa Music Award and has so much going for them. It would be a shame and a big loss to African music to see this group sacrificed on a platter of anything.

Houseboy peeping bathing madam falls and injures spinal cord

A 26-year-old houseboy, Ubong Etu Nbomang, has been hospitalised at the Federal Medical Centre, Asaba, Delta State, after falling and breaking his spine while peeping at his female boss as she was having her bath.

The houseboy was alleged to have made holes around the bathroom door, through which he peeped at his boss whenever she was having a shower.

It was learnt that Nbomang had climbed on a platform to have a vantage view of his boss who is in her 30s and a top federal civil servant in one of the neighbouring states.

A female friend to Nbomang's boss, was said to have walked in and met nobody in the sitting room. On hearing the sound of dropping water, she approached her friend's bathroom out of curiosity, only to find the young man peeping.

The boss's friend, (name withheld), who reportedly spoke to a PUNCH correspondent after the incident, said as Nbomang was peeping, he held his private organ.

The guest, who trades in cooking utensils at the Ogbeogonogo Modern Market, said she shouted at him: 'Nbomang, are you peeping at your madam?"

Nbomang, jumped off where he was and slipped on the wet tiled floor when he heard the visitor's voice.

The unsuspecting boss, who was shocked by her worker's groans, was said to have rushed out of the bathroom half-naked.

She said, "I said to her: 'So, you are not aware he has been here watching you as you were busy having your bath? I met him peeping, after asking for who was in the house without any response. I have been here for more than 15 minutes now without him knowing.'"

As she was telling her friend all these, Nbomang, still groaning in pains, asked his boss to forgive him and take him to hospital.

"Out of pity, the madam called her driver to take Nbomang to a hospital, while she later joined them at the hospital," her friend added.

Speaking with a PUNCH correspondent at the FMC, the boss, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said she was going to sack him.

She said, "Before now, I used to see him looking at me but I didn't think otherwise because I saw it as nothing. It was when he was confessing that I got to know that he was the one that bore tiny holes on my door, which until this incident I never knew of."

Nbomang, who also spoke to a PUNCH correspondent from his hospital bed, pleaded, "Help me beg my madam, na devil work. Na my madam beauty deceive me."

Authorities of the hospital have said that the injury could be treated.

The defendant, who is facing a three-count charge, was arraigned in the chambers of Magistrate L. A. Owolabi.

The lawyer, who, it was gathered, pleaded not guilty to the charges, was granted bail in the sum of N200,000 with two sureties in like sum.

He was, however, remanded at Ikoyi Prisons, Lagos, pending when he is able to perfect his bail conditions.

The grandmother of the victim, who spoke to Vanguard at the premises of the court, said that she had wanted the little girl to stay back in Nigeria with her before the incident occurred.

She said that they had not been able to tell the girl's mother, as she is not a Nigerian, adding that when they called the little girl's mother on phone on Wednesday, the only thing she was able to tell her was that she was ill and taken to the hospital.

How Boko Haram get weapons

The immediate past Chief of the Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Usman Jibrin (rtd), has revealed how terror group, Boko Haram get explosives and other weapons which they use in perpetrating evil.

Admiral Usman, The Nation reports, said Boko Haram get its weapons through theft and purchase from local shops, during a chat with newsmen at the Naval Base, Apapa, Lagos.

He said: "Terrorists are amongst us, they are very difficult for security agencies to identify, without needed intelligence. Since they are amongst us, the source of materials used for their devices are sold by Nigerians and some stolen from shops belonging to some Nigerians.

"To that end, one expects that owners of stolen equipment or those who equipments are bought from should report to the security agencies, their confidentiality is guaranteed because no one will disclose the source of the information.

"I am appealing to Nigerians to support President Buhari and the security agencies so that they can do their jobs well.

"Believing in the effectiveness of intelligence gathering, Nigerians must provide the needed intelligence for security forces to be able to identify would-be bombers and suicide bombers, as well as monitoring to the extent that security forces can unravel where terrorists make their IEDs."

I am richer than Bill Gates - RCCG Pastor E.A Adeboye

The General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Pastor Enoch Adejare Adeboye, has said that he is richer than one of the world's richest man, Bill Gates.

Pastor Adeboye who made the claim while teaching worshippers during the church's 63rd Annual Convention on Saturday, August 8 said he is richer than Bill Gates, from a spiritual angle.

Speaking shortly before a holy communion service on the topic "Overflowing Cup", Pastor Adeboye said that if Bill Gates needs shoes, he would have to go to the market to buy them, but that if he should announce that he needs shoes at the Redemption Camp, where the convention took place, the auditorium might not contain the shoes people would donate to him.

"I have houses in at least 188 countries of the world, where we have our churches, so I am richer than Bill Gates. Each time I visit these countries, my children would be struggling and saying 'daddy, come and stay with me'.

"If I announce here that tomorrow morning, I need a car to travel to the new auditorium, how many cars do you think would be made available to me by you my children? Those of you that do not have a car of your own, very soon, God will give you your own cars. So, I am appealing to you to become an incurable soul winner before you leave this convention ground and your cup will overflow," he said.
