Twin Bomb Blast: Kaduna government imposes 24-hr curfew

Kaduna State Government have imposed a 24-hour curfew within the metropolis following an explosion that occurred in two places.

This is contained in a statement issued by the governor's Deputy Director, Media and Publicity, Alhaji Ahmed Maiyaki, in Kaduna.

Gov. Mukhtar Yero described the attacks as the height of 'cowardice' by those bent on creating tension in the state, said the statement.

"Following the unfortunate situation, a twenty four (24) hours curfew has been imposed on Kaduna metropolis with immediate effect, to enable security agencies restore normalcy.

"Enemies of peace have visited us with their ungodly venom of wanton destruction of human lives

"This blast, coming in the Holy Month of Ramadan, is a clear indication that those behind the act have no iota of fear of God as they have none for the sanctity of human life,'' the statement read in part

The governor, therefore, assured residents of the state that government and security agencies would ensure the security of their lives and property.

NYSC to place corps members on public service salary scale

National Youth Service Corps (NYSC)

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) says it is working toward placing corps members on a public service salary scale to stop frequent agitation for a review of their allowances.

This was disclosed by its Director-General, Brig. Gen. Johnson Olawumi at a media chat on Tuesday in Abuja. He said that already, the scheme was collaborating with the National Salaries and Wages Commission to concretise the proposal.

Olawumi said that the scheme had made series of attempts at the National Assembly to secure an adjustment in the allowances of the corps members, adding that such attempts had been unsuccessful.

He said that the scheme had taken the matter before the wages commission for a solution, adding that the current N19, 800 monthly allowances for corps members was inadequate in view of the economic situation in the country.

The NYSC boss also announced the resuscitation of the Presidential Award to corps members who had excelled in their service to the nation, adding that the 2013 and 2014 editions would hold this year.

On request for corps members' relocation, Olawumi said that such requests were approved only on marital and health grounds.

"However, with the current security situation in some states of the country, the scheme applies the doctrine of necessity when corps members apply for relocation on security reasons.

"In such instances, the corps members get relocated automatically; but not to a state of their choice.''

He, however, warned that the scheme had concluded arrangement to punish those corps members who presented fake health report to aid their relocation, adding that the drastic action would be applied to all those caught in the act to serve as a lesson to others.

Meanwhile, Olawumi said that more than 2.7 million graduates had passed through the scheme since its inception in 1975.

"I have enjoyed love..." - Wole Soyinka's wife tells their love story

Prof. Wole Soyinka recently clocked 80 years old. His wife Folake Soyinka narrates their love story...

How we met:
"I knew he liked me from when I was in the University of Ife but I was young and he was so accomplished so I was kind of worried. After I left Ife and went to do my NYSC in Kaduna state, Dr Biodunjeyifo came to visit me and said Kongi (Prof Wole Soyinka) had been looking for me. After the service year, Dr Yomi Ogunbiyi who was at the Guardian got me a job there and one day, Wole stopped by. Our courtship was interesting"

Challenges we encountered:
"There were objections from everywhere except from my sisters and brother who were happy if I was. I also had the support of his siblings here. My parents along with most of my relatives objected, not because of anything, they just felt he was too famous and too accomplished. They worried about that. But within a few months after we were married, my parents had changed their mind and they loved him until they passed away. His close friends didn't have a problem with it but also everyone had an opinion. Then came the Nobel Prize in 1986 and that derailed everything for a couple of years. More than a quarter of a century later, those opinions didn't count, we are still trudging along. I have enjoyed love because of him"

How he assists in the kitchen:
"He cooks and he is quite good at it. He even cooked about two days ago. When the boys were really little, one day in California, he called all of us to the kitchen and said he wanted to have a family meeting. They were so young I don't even think they had any concept of what a family meeting was. He lined all three according to their heights and asked me to sit. He said he has something to tell us and he was only going to say it once. He whipped some cooking utensils, moved them around noisily in the pot, threw some up, caught them performed a few tricks and then told us to listen. He said there were only three people in the world who can cook pasta like he does; one is dead, the other is in Silica, Italy and he is the third one and he is going to cook something that we have never eaten. He cooked pasta that day and we truly enjoyed it. True dramatist." she said.

Why i'm going into politics - Desmond Elliot

Nollywood actor Desmond Elliot has revealed to Nigerian Tribune why he is running for a seat in the Lagos State House of Reps. He says he wants to give back to the society through politics that will be favourable to the youths.

He said: The current situation is very pathetic. I feel God has helped me thus far and I want to give back through politics that will be favourable to the youths. The worst part of our national life is that the level of corruption has not allowed youths to understand what it means to live a meaningful life. Just because of lack of knowledge of what to do, we are being side tracked. There are no jobs, and issues like these lead to frustration. A whole lot needs to be done on agriculture, every state in Nigeria needs to see how it can contribute to nation building. There's a lot that needs to be done.

Chelsea drops Mikel from pre-season tour

Mikel Obi's days as a Chelsea midfielder appear numbered as the London club dropped the Nigerian from their pre-season European playing tour.

Checks on the Chelsea website showed that the Stamford Bridge team left London on Monday for Austria with the Nigerian's name missing from the list of players that flew to Vienna. Mikel has been on the radar of some Europeans teams since the last stages of the 2013/14 season with Italian teams Inter Milan and AC Milan as the major teams that showed interest.

The tour will take them across to Slovenia where they face Olimpija Ljubljana on Sunday, before the Jose Mourinho army take on Vitesse Arnhem and Werder Bremen, in The Netherlands and Germany respectively.
