The General Officer Commanding the newly created 7 Division of Nigerian Army, Major General Ahmed Mohammed, yesterday miraculously escaped being killed as soldiers under his command shot at him.
Mohammed's bodyguards and aides were not so lucky as they sustained gunshot wounds from the protesting soldiers.
The attack on the General and his men occurred when the GOC visited Maimalari cantonment, headquarters of 7 Division.
According to sources, the soldiers at the cantonment had been complaining that their superiors have not provided them with adequate weaponry with which to fight the war against the 'better-armed' Boko Haram militants.
"We the soldiers don't have the kind of arms and ammunition that [Boko Haram] fighters have. So everyday, they kill our men anyhow, but it is never published in the media," said one source.
Another source also complained that the commanding officers "are too busy 'eating' money. And they do not pay our allowances on time. And once [a soldier dies], nobody knows what happens to his allowances again."
Meanwhile the Nigerian Army says it will investigate the mutiny.
A statement by spokesman Major General Christ Olukolade said the inquiry will be on "the circumstances surrounding the conduct of soldiers who fired some shots today while the General Officers Commanding was addressing troops in Maimalari cantonment Maiduguri."
