"As far as the constitution allows me, i will try to ensure that there is a responsible and accountable governance at all levels of government in the country." With this statement Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, has once again given us confidence that the long awaited change has finally arrived.
Buhari's inaugural speech today at the Eagles Square is something i would like to describe as "the speech of change".
The president in his speech highlighted and promised to tackle what he called the "immediate challenges" of Nigeria, namely: Boko Haram, "The Niger Delta situation", power shortages and unemployment. While the long term challenges include: Improvement of the standard of education and upgrade of poor infrastructure.
President Buhari reassured Nigerians of his readiness to tackle the Boko Haram menace, saying the military command centers will be relocated from Abuja to the war front, Maiduguri, until Boko Haram is subdued. He separated Islam from Boko Haram, describing them as a "mindless and godless group". He also promised to rescue the Chibok school girls who have been in Boko Haram captivity for over a year, and every other person in the terrorist captivity alive.
President Muhammad Buhari also promised to "rebuild and reform the public service to become more effective and more serviceable". Also he promised that the federal government under his watch will check the gross corruption in the local levels of government.
No doubt President Buhari has captured our hearts with his inaugural speech, we pray and hope he will keep to his promises, unlike our past leaders.
Congratulations to Nigeria, change is here. Congratulations to Muhammadu Buhari. And Happy Democracy Day to all Nigerians.
